Atlantis readied for launch
The rotating service structure moved away from the space shuttle the night before launch, exposing Atlantis to the blindingly bright xenon flood lights at pad 39A as the countdown rolled onward to liftoff.
This collection of images shows the scene at Kennedy Space Center as the gantry rolled back in the early evening. While waiting for the tower to move, photographers watched as Atlantis' astronauts flew practice landing approaches aboard a training jet.
