Lightning hits shuttle launch pad

SPACEFLIGHT NOW DIGITAL VIDEO
Posted: Sept. 6, 2000

A bolt of lightning struck launch pad 39B during a severe thunderstorm on Sept. 5 while space shuttle Atlantis awaited its planned Sept. 8 liftoff to the international space station. This video shows various angles of the strike from a series of launch pad cameras. The shuttle was not damaged because the pad's lightning shielding system protected the $2 billion spaceship.
