Launch weather forecast
Posted: May 22, 2006

 Forecast for Wednesday, May 24

Issued: Monday, May 22
Launch Weather Officer: 45th Weather Squadron

Synoptic Discussion: "Surface ridge will remain located over central and southern Florida. Upper level low pressure over the western Gulf will allow tropical moisture to slowly advect northward over the next few days, although mostly still confined to the southern half of Florida. Deep influx of moisture will not occur until the surface ridge breaks down and moves eastward. Isolated to scattered thunderstorms will develop along sea breeze boundary as it moves inland during the afternoon, again mainly in areas south of the Cape.

"Vehicle exposure concerns right now appear to be low but will be monitored closely.

"Main concerns during the launch window will be for 54 foot level winds > 14-15 knot (wind direction dependant) associated with the afternoon sea breeze, and for clouds within 10 nautical miles that are associated with any isolated thunderstorms that may develop."

Clouds: Cumulus Scattered at 3,000 feet with tops at 12,000 feet; Altocumulus Scattered at 10,000 feet with tops at 12,000 feet; and Cirrus Scattered at 25,000 feet with tops at 26,000 feet

Visibility: 10 miles

Launch Pad Winds: East-Southeasterly from 100 degrees at 8 to 12 knots

Temperature: 82-84 degrees F

Relative Humidity: 60 percent

Weather: Isolated thunderstorms in vicinity

Solar Activity: Low

Probability of Violating Weather Constraints: 40 percent

Concerns: Launch winds (at 54-foot level), anvil cloud rule, cumulus cloud rule

 Forecast for 24-hour delay

Thursday's Probability of Violating Constraints: 60 percent
Concerns: Anvil cloud rule, cumulus cloud rule, launch winds (at 54-foot level)
